Dating With Food Allergies

About 15 million Americans suffer from food allergies. Many people carry Epi-Pens or Auvi-Q auto injectors when eating at restaurants. It is important for people to discuss their food allergies when dating and when eating in public.

Many people start dating when they are teenagers. This is an important social time with dinner dates, prom, parties, graduations and other events involving food. This is also a good time for parents to discuss food allergies with their children.

Knowing what your food allergies or your significant others allergies are is the most important thing. Close human contact, such as a quick kiss can be life-threatening to someone with food allergies. Always make sure to avoid eating foods that you or your significant other are allergic to. If you do eat something they are allergic to, make to wash hands and brush your teeth before close contact with your significant other.

When going out to eat, always tell your server and the cook what your allergies are. If you are at a friend’s house, be sure to let them know as well. Cross-contamination is common and can happen easily. Always have your two-pack epinephrine auto-injectors with you. Epinephrine is the first step to help with anaphylaxis. It helps prevent further complications until medical help arrives. Always call for emergency medical help after using your auto injector.

Contact an allergist if you are concerned about allergies. Being educated about allergies, symptoms and anaphylaxis is the first step to living a healthy, safe life! You do not have to suffer!
