Drug allergies are common for many people. It can be to antibiotics, NSAIDS or pain medications. Reactions from drug allergies can occur anywhere and include rash, hives, anaphylaxis, wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, fever, itching, vomiting and swelling of the mouth, throat, nose, face and lips.

The most common drug allergies include:
◾Penicillin, Amoxicillin (and possibly other ‘cillin’ drugs)
◾Sulfa based drugs
◾NSAIDS (Aspirin and Ibuprofen)
◾Insulin
◾Other antibiotics

For those with severe drug allergies, they may wear medical bracelets and carry an Epi-pen. Reactions to medications may happen the first time you take them or after a few doses. Be sure to document any medications you take and what type of reaction you have with them.

If you feel you have a drug allergy, contact an Allergist. They will perform a drug testing and challenges. Based on your results, you will know which medications to avoid, and which medications you can take in place of those. You do not have to suffer!
