Many of us have heard of the Paleo diet at one time or another. This diet may be beneficial to those with allergies, joint pain and inflammatory diseases, or for those who just want to eat clean and feel better.
The Paleo diet is meant to help people eat healthier and not consume added sugar preservatives, chemicals and additives. While proteins and fats build muscle and keep you full between meals, the nutrients from plants help keep inflammation down. The food limitations help with weight loss and red meat gives you more iron.
The Paleo diet allows you to eat the following foods:
• lean meats
• seafood and fish (great for eyes, heart and brain)
• fruits (these contain vitamins, fibers, potassium and folic acid)
• nuts (no peanuts)
• pumpkin and sunflower seeds
• non-starch vegetables (cauliflower, asparagus, lettuce, green beans, broccoli, spinach, etc.)
• oils including olive, walnut, coconut, grapeseed
While on this diet you cannot eat the following:
• legumes or beans
• milk, yogurt, cheese, ice cream
• grains (oats, barley, rice, wheat)
• meats high in fat (hot dogs, ribs, ground meat, bologna, salami, pepperoni, etc)
• Sugars (no soda)
• Foods with salt (chips, pretzels)
As with any diet, cost can be a factor. Fish and meat can be pricey, so look for deals or buy in bulk. There is nothing wrong with spending a little more money to be healthy. If you are interested in the Paleo diet talk with your physician to see if it would be beneficial to your health.
