Preparing for Back to School

School will be back in session soon which means refilling medications, updating medical forms and preparing students for the school year. This makes summer a great time of the year to get a checkup with your physician.

With roughly 15 million Americans having food allergies, this means more awareness in schools. It is important to educate your child about their food allergies if they have any. Making sure their epinephrine auto injectors are refilled and their medication papers are complete is also very important.

With other children having food allergies, it is also a good idea to educate your children about the severity of food allergies. In school, kids may trade part of their lunch for something else, so make sure to discuss these topics with your children. Peanut allergies are very common and can be severe, so it is important to ask before sharing food.

If your child has prescription medications and/or medical conditions, make sure to contact your physician ahead of time to get paperwork signed. These forms cannot always be done right away. Be sure to complete as much of the information as you can, including which medications they take. If your child will need refills before school starts, schedule their appointment for the summer so they have their checkups and medications ahead of time.
